I read that treatment can smell of mayonnaise and mayonnaise to make my hair for a while. How can I avoid or eliminate the odor?

Why do you want mayonnaise or other food in your hair? Wash the area with 40W motor oil?
Stick with products that are manufactured specifically for the hair. They are much better than trying things that were in use before the hair-invented products.
